소개

≪새로운 태양들≫은 다양한 생각, 경험, 정체성이 교차하는 다층적인 세계관을 상상하고 실험하는 장입니다. 이 프로젝트는 한국 동시대 예술과 교육의 새로운 접점이 필요하다는 공통의 생각에서 출발합니다. 앞으로 3년간, 다양한 배경과 활동을 추구하는 작가, 기획자, 활동가 등이 모여 함께 배우고 협업하는 공동체가 되고자 합니다.

많은 작가와 기획자들이 대학과 미술계 제도 안에서 실험적 창작과 교류의 공동체를 찾는 데 어려움을 겪습니다. ≪새로운 태양들≫은 공동 학습, 유대 관계 속에서 창작할 수 있는 공간을 마련하고자 합니다. 결과보다 과정을 존중하는 예술 연구와 창작 활동을 통해 학문적·제도적·시장적 기대에 내재한 규범을 넘어선 가능성을 탐색하고자 합니다. 우리는 예술이 변화를 촉매할 수 있고, 예술가가 그 변화의 주체가 될 수 있으며, 공동체가 미적 실험성과 사회적 참여성을 동시에 지녀 창조적 사회 변화를 촉발할 수 있다고 믿습니다. 이러한 관점은 옥타비아 E. 버틀러의 미출간 작품 『트릭스터의 우화(Parable of the Trickster)』 머리말에 등장한다고 알려진 말, “태양 아래 새로운 것은 없지만, 새로운 태양들은 있다”라는 문장에서 영감을 얻었습니다. 끝나지 않는 전쟁과 절망적인 실패의 시대에도, 모든 사람이 하나의 태양이 될 수 있다는 믿음이 프로젝트의 출발점이 되었습니다.

앞으로 3년간 ≪새로운 태양들≫은 해마다 새로운 주제와 관객 참여의 기회를 통해 공동체를 확장할 것입니다. 올해의 주제 ‘이동(mobility)’은 사회를 움직이는 다양한 흐름에 집중합니다. 예를 들어, 이주민과 난민의 물리적 이동, 생태·기술 시스템에서의 비인간적 이동성, 장애인의 접근권, 젠더와 정체성에 대한 사회적 이해의 전환, 데이터와 자본의 흐름 등이 있습니다. 이를 탐구하기 위해 송민형, 박영아, 고아침, 김환, 한톨을 초대하여 ‘이동’을 둘러싼 다양한 경험과 논의를 나누는 강연과 워크숍을 진행하였습니다. 이어 진행된 오픈 스튜디오에서는 참여자들(109, 고권금, 고유필, 김아람, 박효범, 배수림, 오예지, 유은, 조연주, 한지현)이 각자의 방식으로 ‘이동’을 해석하며 연구와 창작의 과정을 보여주는 시간을 가졌습니다. 이 과정과 기록은 ≪새로운 태양들: 이동 오픈 아카이브≫(2025.09.01-09.14)를 통해 전시합니다. 전시는 ‘과정, 실험, 교류’를 강조하며, 관객이 창작 과정을 담은 다양한 기록물을 직접 열람하고 경험할 수 있는 열린 공간이 되기를 기대합니다. 또한, 참여자들의 아카이브 소개 영상을 프로젝트 웹사이트에 공개할 예정이며, 9월 4일부터 전시장에서도 상영됩니다.

≪새로운 태양들≫은 상호 배움 속에서 함께 어울리며 만들어가는 삶 속의 예술을 탐구하고자 합니다. 공동체는 인위적으로 형성할 수 있는 것이 아니라, 공유된 경험, 신뢰, 호기심을 통해 자연스럽게 형성된다고 믿습니다. 이러한 협력적인 환경 속에서, 새로운 태양들은 배경과 활동의 영역이 다른 사람들이 모여 배우고, 만들고, 다른 상상을 시도하는 힘과 에너지를 찾습니다.

2025년 ≪새로운 태양들: 이동≫은 작가 최태윤의 주관으로 기획자 박가희, 프로젝트 매니저 전혜수와 김재아의 협업으로 시작되었습니다. 공개 모집을 통해 선발된 다양한 연령과 배경의 참여자 10명이 이 프로젝트에 함께하고 있으며, 다수의 협력자, 특히 2024년 ≪새로운 태양들≫의 실험적 시작에 함께했던 작가들이 올해 2025년에는 디자인, 워크숍, 공간 제작 등 핵심적인 역할로 다시 참여했습니다.

About

The New Suns is a three-year project that grew from a shared desire to rethink contemporary art, activism, and education within the context of South Korea. Although activist art and community organizing have a long-standing history and continue to thrive in South Korea. The presence of the global art market and large institutions frequently eclipses these critical, socially engaged efforts. Local practitioners experience challenges to find spaces for experimentation and community within the existing academia and institutions. In response, the New Suns seeks to create a safe space for art-making grounded in conviviality and interdependent relationships of mutual support and collective learning. Our approach emphasizes collaborative, emergent practices rooted in artistic research that honors process over the product, in order to go beyond the confines of social norms embedded in disciplinary, academic, and market expectations. We believe that art can serve as a catalyst for social change, artists can act as agents of that change, and communities can ignite the creative process by nurturing practices that are both aesthetically experimental and politically engaged. This perspective draws inspiration from a quote attributed to Octavia E. Butler “There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns” which is known to appear as an epigram for her never-published work Parable of the Trickster.

Initiated by artist Taeyoon Choi, in collaboration with curator Gahee Park and project managers Hyesu Jeon and Jaea Kim, the New Suns include 10 participants from various regions in South Korea selected through an open call. This year’s theme is mobility inspired by various ways movement shapes reality; the physical movement of migrants and refugees, non-human mobilities across ecological and technological systems, the right to access for people with disabilities, transformation of social understanding of gender and identity, and the flows of data and capital. The program consists of lectures and workshops with guests including Min Hyoung Song, Achim Koh, Hwan Kim, Hantol.

New Suns: Mobility’s participants include 109, Soorim Bae, Kwonkeum Ko, Yupil Ko, Yeonjoo Cho, Jihyeon Han, Aram Kim, Yeji Oh, Eun U, and Hyobeom Bak. Participants each led Open Studios featuring their works-in-progress, workshops and performances, and the related documentation will be presented as part of Open Archive (2025. 09.01-09.14), an evolving exhibition set to unfold the journey of 2025, highlighting process, experimentation, and exchange. The exhibition will be open to the public, with video documentation available on the project website. The New Suns’ Open Archive will continue to evolve over a three-year period with new themes and opportunities for public participation.

The New Suns explores conviviality as freedom within interdependence, a condition where individuals can meaningfully co-shape their world. We believe community cannot be manufactured; it must emerge naturally through shared experiences, trust, and curiosity. In this informal, collaborative environment, New Suns finds its strength and energy of people coming together to learn, make, and imagine otherwise in South Korea and beyond.
